The main objective in a blackjack game is to beat the dealer by holding a final hand value closer to 21 than the dealer's, without going over 21. You do not need to score exactly 21 to win a round. Finishing on 18 or 19 beats any lower dealer total, and it also wins whenever the dealer busts by exceeding 21.

A "natural blackjack" occurs when your first two cards consist of an Ace and any 10-value card (10, Jack, Queen, or King). This two-card combination gives an instant total of 21 and traditionally pays at the premium ratio of 3:2. If your hand total exceeds 21 after you draw, your hand "busts" and loses immediately, regardless of what the dealer draws afterwards. When both you and the dealer finish with identical totals, the round ends in a tie known as a "push", and your original wager returns to your account balance.

Every round of playing blackjack begins when you place a bet within the posted table limits, before any cards move. Once betting closes, the dealer distributes the initial hand. In standard American variants, two cards are dealt face up to each player position, while the blackjack dealer receives one card face up (the upcard) and one card face down (the hole card).

That structure gives you full visibility of your own starting total and partial information about the dealer's strength. In European variants, the dealer takes only one card face up initially and draws the second card after all players have finished their decisions. In both formats, initial wagers must be settled in your account currency or play credits before the cards leave the shoe.

1. Assign a value to every card rank.
   • Cards 2 through 6 = +1 (removing low cards helps the player).
   • Cards 7 through 9 = 0 (neutral, ignored in the calculation).
   • Cards 10, J, Q, K and Ace = -1 (removing high cards helps the dealer).
2. Maintain the running count. Start at 0 when a fresh shoe is shuffled, then add or subtract as each card appears on the felt. A positive running count favours the player, a negative one favours the house.
3. Convert to the true count. Divide the running count by the estimated number of undealt decks left in the shoe: True Count = Running Count / Decks Remaining
4. Adjust bet sizing. When the true count reaches +2 or higher, the shoe is rich in 10s and Aces, so the counter raises the unit bet in proportion to the count and drops back to a minimum bet when the count falls.

Historians place the origins of blackjack in French casinos of the 1700s, where a game called Vingt-et-Un ("Twenty-One") circulated among the nobility. Card-game scholarship also links the family tree back to the 15th-century western-European game "Thirty-One", with Vingt-et-Un recorded as fashionable in French upper-class circles by around 1760. As European immigrants carried the game to North America in the 19th century, American gambling houses added promotional payouts to attract players, notably a 10-to-1 bonus if a player held the Ace of Spades alongside a black Jack (Jack of Spades or Jack of Clubs). The multiplier vanished eventually. The name "Blackjack" stayed.

Conventional gambling lore credits those American promotions, but alternative research proposes a different lineage. French card historian Thierry Depaulis has argued that the name refers to zinc blende, a dark mineral associated with silver and gold deposits, which prospectors themselves called "black-jack". In his reading, Twenty-One was widely played during the Klondike Gold Rush of the late 1800s, and miners transferred their own slang to the prized two-card 21, so the term drifted from geology into gambling vocabulary.

In the mid-20th century, mathematicians such as Edward O. Thorp published statistical analyses that changed the game permanently. His 1962 book Beat the Dealer proved blackjack could be analysed systematically through probability theory and basic strategy models. Later academic material built directly on that work: university course notes put the basic-strategy house edge as low as 0.16% under favourable rules, while archival analyses of Thorp's early framework cite 0.62% for the rule set he studied.
